Aurora Borealis

Also known as the Northern Lights. The dancing lights of the aurora are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. Northern lights may appear in many colours as seen in my photos, with green, pink being the most common. Often times our vision is unable to pick up the colour of the lights and they may only appear as gray clouds moving through the sky. This is due to the way our eyes work. We have 2 types of receptors in our eyes, rods, and cones. Rods are our night vision, almost everything is seen in black and white. Cones are our colour vision, they are great for seeing colour but require much more light.

β€œThe Northern Lights are the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun's atmosphere. Variations in colour are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth. Rare, all-red auroras are produced by high-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles. Nitrogen produces blue or purplish-red aurora.” - NorthernLightsCenter.ca
